Types of Strategies

Strategies are the techniques you use to learn something. There are many strategies for learning new vocabulary. Try different strategies and see which work best for you.

1. mind maps
2. similar meanings
3. opposites
4. definitions
5. sentences
6. notes
7. picture or diagram
8. word pairs
9. personal association
10. list of word definitions

You can also use audio and video to create your vocabulary cards. Be as creative as possible and use your personal associations. Try to avoid translation. Effective translation is not just about words. Sometimes languages use the same words in different contexts. Learning a language is also about concepts and ideas and often these cannot simply be translated word for word. It is more effective to learn English using English rather than your native language.
